This is a great book for seasoned IT professionals that want to learn how to secure small and medium sized networks.

As others have said, if you want to read only one book, this is the one. The authors did a great job of describing concepts and relevant low level details and tools.

I enjoyed reading most of it, but I skimmed parts that described processes that seasoned engineers have applied countless times.

AirSnare

AirSnare is another tool to add to your Wireless Intrusion Detection Toolbox.  AirSnare will alert you to unfriendly MAC addresses on your network and will also alert you to DHCP requests taking place.  If AirSnare detects an unfriendly MAC address you have the option of tracking the MAC address's access to IP addresses and ports or by launching Ethereal upon a detection.

This book is ok as a reference, but I would recommend it only as an introduction or guide – perhaps to give an idea of the topics that you might encounter on CCIE written, and which could be the basis of further research of your own. I agree with the previous review that said the book is too brief in many sections – some sections (esp. in Chapter 3) provide minimal value.

I am also very annoyed with the number of basic errors in this book. The technical reviewers have done a truly lousy job here.
Here’s some of the most basic I have found in the just the first couple of chapters.

1. Page 25 – Class D addresses first byte range 224-247.
2. Page 27 – RFC1918 Class B range 172.16.0.0 through 172.32.255.255

I am amazed at how Cisco can let such fundamental gaffes like this out in a book targeted to CCIEs.
Neither of these are currently corrected in the errata on the [...] site either.

“During the rebootubf (sic) process” on Page 59 – I understand that typos can be missed but I wonder if the reviewers from Cisco have actually read this paragraph!

For me the book does provide some value in CCIE preparation, but for books priced around $60 I would have hoped the completeness, accuracy and quality would have been a lot higher. Perhaps later editions of the book will correct these issues (I have the Mar 2008 printing).

This is just not a useful book. Half of the book is not about intrusion detection at all–it consists of an uninspiring general introduction to computer security.

The author apparently has no actual experience in the subject. It is filled with innaccuracies. Confusing ‘hash value’ with ‘digital signature’ is a common rookie mistake, but it is typical of the inexcusable lack of precision in this text.

Besides being misleading, off-subject, and out-of-date, it is deadly boring. If you want a hands-on book, get the Northcutt text. If you want an academic and useful theoretical approach, get Amoroso’s book. If you want an introductory text on information security, why would you buy a book on IDS?

It is apparent that Wiley badly wanted to publish a book on intrusion detection, and the author was all too willing to squeeze his existing square peg of a security text into an ill-fitting IDS round hole.[yahooquestion]network+intrusion+protection[/yahooquestion]

We all have heard of electric fences that are basically used to promote safety and deter intruders from entering our territory. It's no different for our computer networks. They also require effective protection through an electric fence called network intrusion prevention. A network intrusion prevention system or IPS is generally referred to as an active security measure because it is capable of blocking malicious traffic by interfering in the data flow. In network security, the IPS represents the next generation intrusion detection system. It inherits the thorough detection capabilities of an IPS and the blocking abilities of a firewall device network intrusion protection to perform intrusion prevention.

 

How a Network Intrusion Prevention Device Works

A network intrusion prevention system thoroughly analyzes every network data packet that passes through the network. This way, an IPS keeps a check on the traffic and also recognizes patterns of data. An IPS instantly acts whenever an unauthorized user carries out an attack on the network. It identifies the attack and denies access to that user leaving his/her attempt of intruding in the network futile. An IPS also plays an important role in shifting the traffic flow through the network and ensures that there is no interruption in the way of crucial files. For instance, financial transactions can be prioritized over normal web surfing by using an IPS.

 

Network Intrusion Prevention and Zero-Day Threat Prevention

An IPS deploys a database of 'generic attack behaviors' that is intended to block unknown attacks apart from a signature database that contains known attack patterns. This functionality is referred to as zero-day threat prevention. A zero-day threat is a type of malicious code and is powerful enough to mislead even antivirus and anti-spyware software. You may deploy this functionality to your network but it may block legitimate traffic by falsely identifying it as an attack. This is not the case with an Intrusion Detection System (IDS). The idea is to configure your IPS device to work like an IDS so that it can collect traffic and enable the administrator to recognize any false positive flows. These flows can be excluded from the inspection engine once the system is configured to act as IPS.

Intrusion detection systems (IDS) are used to determine whether security has been breached and unauthorized access granted to property, resources or data.

Examples of perimeter-based intrusion detection systems include buried differential-pressure systems, fence-mounted detection systems, infrared (IR) beam systems, stressed-wire fences, and microwave barriers. Intrusion detection (ID) products that provide perimeter security include both equipment, hardware and software components.

They can be used to protect oil fields, prisons, nuclear power plants, chemical processing facilities, embassies, government and corporate offices, military bases and archeological sites. There are two broad applications areas: systems for network systems and systems for property and personnel. Intrusion detection systems for computer networks are used to identify security breaches, prevent external attacks, and stop the internal misuse of resources. Pattern matching detection and statistical anomaly detection are the most common techniques. Intrusion detection systems (IDS) for computer networks intrusion differ in terms of features.

Misuse detection systems compare information to a database of attack signatures to determine whether a potential threat is documented. Anomaly detection systems compare monitored network segments to baseline values for network load, protocol and packet size. Network-based intrusion detection systems (NIDS) are designed to detect malicious packets that can compromise firewalls.

Host-based intrusion detection systems examine the activity on individual computers. Passive systems are used to detect security breaches, log data, and signal alerts. By contrast, reactive systems respond to suspicious activities by terminating a user’s session or reprogramming firewalls to block network traffic from specific IP addresses or domains. There are many types of intrusion detection systems (IDS) for perimeter security. Passive systems detect radiant energy or changes in an existing infrared, seismic, or magnetic field.

Active systems radiate beams of infrared light or radio frequency (RF) signals to create a detection field which, when interrupted, causes an alarm to sound or an annunciator to display. Visible systems such as fences can deter potential intruders and lower maintenance costs.

Covert systems are more expensive than exposed ones, but hide the features of the intrusion detection system. Line of sight systems require an unobstructed view from the origin of the detection field to its termination. Examples include bi-static microwave, mono-static microwave, active infrared, and passive infrared systems.

Terrain-based products include buried sensors, sensor fences, fence-mounted sensors, and RF sensors. Volumetric intrusion detection systems create a three-dimensional detection field that is difficult to defeat. Examples include microwave, passive IR, electric field, and video motion products. Linear detection systems require less physical space, but are easier to defeat by bridging or bypassing. Examples include fence mounted products, strain-sensitive sensors, and sensor fences.
